Sinking House

Location: Bath, UK
Architect: Stride Treglown
Engineer: Format Engineers
Contractor: FM Carpentry
Install: FM Carpentry / Will Trickett / Greenman

Placed in one of the most iconic locations in Bath, Sinking House appeared semi-submerged and at a tipping point between Pulteney Weir and Pulteney Bridge. On the chimney, a human-like figure, by local artist Anna Gillespie, held a lifeline which reads ‘COP26’. The piece highlighted the need for immediate action to avoid the devastating consequences of climate change.

Spark Structures Director Lloyd Evans was part of the engineering design team at Format Engineers as well as the FM Carpentry construction and install team for the Sinking House project ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26).

The project marked the culmination of endless community collaboration during the extremely constrained two month design and build programme. The local Bath Sea Cadets were very generous in donating a floating pontoon and use of their facilities as a building and launch site.

The project won the Architects’ Journal Collaboration Award 2022.
